First crabbing, then clamming, now finally fishing! This evening we had our long-awaited session with local fishing guide Brianna Bruce of Livin’ Life Adventures. Bree had chosen this day months ago because she predicted that It would be just warm enough for Lake Stevens kokanee to bite. It turns out she was spot on. Starting yesterday, people’s kokanee catches started appearing on Facebook – and the weather this weekend was great! We spent nearly five hours with her learning how to fish, and grilling her with questions about gear, bait, location, timing, and technique. This included which other species we could catch with the gear we already have (or with just an incremental upgrade). We were running six poles at once. Brianna has one of those big open boats that guides often use because they have so many rods in the water at once. It’s got lots of storage space along the rails, and a huge two-stroke outboard. It’s amazing to see her skill at turning the thing on a dime and docking it perfectly without a second thought.
I caught the first fish of my life today, and between us we took home seven kokanee. We even had a “double”, where we each had a fish on the line at the same time! It’s a shame we didn’t have time to cook them fresh tonight – it was nearly dark by the time we got home. Our experience won’t be complete until we taste our harvest, but our catch went into the freezer until next weekend. Now we are prepared to fish on our own from my boat. Bree is astoundingly knowledgeable about all kinds of fishing, and also holds a US Coast Guard 25-ton captain’s license. I highly recommend her.
