If you don’t know about Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, you should definitely go. It was part of the “Triangle of Fire”, one of three forts built in the 1890s to guard the entrance to Puget Sound from potential invaders. The other two are Fort Worden by Port Townsend, and Fort Flagler on Marrowstone Island. Fort Casey was decommissioned for a time, and then placed back into service during WWII. Now it’s a state park. With my boat in the shop to have a squeaking sound in the engine investigated, it was the perfect way to spend the day. A volunteer group happened to be there today with military memorabilia. Unfortunately it rained most of the day, but normally you have great views over the sea from the towers and gun batteries. It’s a very cool piece of Washington history.
