Breaking In the Boat and Skipper

I had a great afternoon with Tyler out on Lake Stevens putting the boat through its paces. He showed me how to launch it for the first time. I got in some high quality docking practice, and then we let the boat run free to see what it can do. I can’t run it flat out yet because I’m still breaking in the engine, but I did a couple of circuits around the lake at cruising speed and a lot of figure eights in the water. It’s going to be really fun when I get in into the river and more remote places. I especially like that I can drive it standing up. Tyler was very pleased at just how well it handles chop. The east end of the lake was a bit breezy and choppy, enough that it would have stressed me out a little in my canoe. However, at a 20 mph cruise my Whaler just skips over the waves like “you call that a wave?” Today was the first day I really felt like a boat owner. I’m also feeling increasingly confident that I made the right choice of boat. Its simplicity, small size, ease of handling, and overall utility made it a great choice.
