I enjoy living in the Pacific Northwest, where a new adventure is never far away for those who seek it. In 2021 I bought my first boat, a new Boston Whaler 150 Montauk. Since then I have taken up fishing, crabbing, clamming, squidding, and just about anything you can do with an amazing little 15-foot boat. I am always impressed by the capabilities of my “Mini Montauk”, and I take it on adventures all over Puget Sound. I christened it “Double Nickel” because I bought it in my mid-50s, in a time of life when many of my domestic responsibilities had been discharged, and I could finally enjoy life on my own terms. This blog chronicles my journey of knowing absolutely nothing about boating or fishing, making countless mistakes along the way, and slowly gaining confidence and competence. Fishing is hard. My goal is not to brag about how great of a fisherman I am, but rather to tell an authentic story about failure, learning, and eventually hard-earned success.
Not all my adventures involve the “Mini Montauk”. In addition to boating and fishing, I still enjoy other aspects of Northwest life including hiking, canoeing, local travel, and general exploring. So, my blog includes those adventures as well. I have traveled all over the world, and for decades I have loved writing about my adventures, before social media even was a thing. It’s my way of sharing my often-crazy experiences with others. Photography has been a passion of mine ever since I took a class on it in middle school, so it’s the perfect compliment to my writing. I am currently learning videography, and always have my GoPro at the ready when I’m on my boat.
